FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team continued its hot streak, as they knocked off No. 12 Cal State Fullerton, 9-4, Tuesday evening in a non-conference game at Goodwin Field.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 7-7 overall, and have now won five of their last six games, all against ranked opponents. With the loss, the Titans fall to 9-6 overall and saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end.
San Diego wasted no time in scoring, as they pushed across four runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Jerod Smith led off the frame with a walk, and moved to second on a passed ball. Two batters latter, Jesse Jenner singled to move Smith to third. Two batters later, Colton Waltner then hit an RBI single to left field, scoring Smith for the first run of the game. Ryan Kirby then launched his first home run of the season, a 3-run blast over the right field fence to give USD a 4-0 lead.
Fullerton then took back a run in the bottom of the second inning on a bases-loaded Tristan Hildebrandt RBI walk, to move the score to 4-1.
USD then took back that run in the top of the fourth inning on a Bryson Brigman RBI single, which scored Ryan Kirby, who had singled, to give San Diego back a 4-run lead at 5-1.
The Titans then closed the gap down to one run, as they put up three runs on two hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. The CSF runs came on a Tanner Pinkston RBI groundout to the pitcher, a Dalton Blaser RBI groundout, and a Turner Buis solo home run to move the score to 5-4.
San Diego then scored an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning on a Brigman RBI single, which scored Kirby, who had singled, to give USD a 6-4 lead.
USD then put the game completely out of reach in the top of the ninth, as they scored three more runs on four hits to put the game at its final of 9-4.
Offensively for the Toreros, Kirby led the way, as he went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Kyle Holder, Jenner, Austin Bailey, and Brigman also had good days, as they each recorded multiple hits.
Jacob Hill (4-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on one hit in 3.2 innings of work. Fullerton's Kyle Murray (1-1) was saddled with the loss for the Titans, as he allowed four runs on three hits in 1.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they open West Coast Conference play when the University of Portland comes to town for a 6 p.m. game at Fowler Park.
