March 15, 2015

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team held off a late University of Portland rally to complete a three-game sweep of the Pilots with a 4-3 win Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at Fowler Park.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 10-7 overall, move to 3-0 in the WCC, and have now won five in a row and eight of their last nine games. With the loss, the Pilots fall to 4-18 overall, move to 0-3 in the WCC and have now lost eight consecutive games.

The Pilots got on the scoreboard first, as in the top of the first inning, Caleb Whalen led off the frame with a triple to right centerfield. USD then attempted a hidden ball trick at third, but were called for a balk instead, allowing Whalen to come across the plate to give Portland a 1-0 lead.

After the Pilots tacked on another run in the top of the second inning, USD responded with a three-run bottom half of the second inning. Bryson Brigman got things started with a double to left centerfield, and moved to third when Austin Bailey hit a slow roller to the shortstop, and the Pilots then failed to get Brigman out in a pickle, which also allowed Bailey to reach second base. Riley Adams then launched his second home run of the season, a three-run blast over the left field fence to give USD a 3-2 lead.

San Diego added in an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Hunter Mercado-Hood RBI single, which scored Waltner, who had walked, to give the Toreros a 4-2 lead.

The Pilots then made things interesting in the top of the eighth inning, as they pushed across one run, then USD closer Anthony McIver stepped onto the rubber, and got out of a bases-loaded jam, to preserve the USD lead at 4-3.

Portland then went down in the ninth in order to give USD the sweep.

Offensively for the Toreros, Adams led the way, as he went 1-for-4 with home run and three RBI. Both Jesse Jenner and Brigman went 2-for-4, while Waltner went 2-for-3.

CJ Burdick (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, as he allowed no runs on one hit in 3.2 innings of work. McIver picked up is fourth save of the season, as he allowed no runs on one hit in 1.2 innings of work. Portland's Davis Tominaga (1-3) was saddled with the loss, as he allowed four runs on one hit in 8.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday, as they host the Cougars at Washington State University in a 6 p.m. non-conference game at Fowler Park.
