SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team continued its hot play, as they picked up a 2-1 win over Santa Clara University Friday evening in a West Coast Conference game at Schott Stadium.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 12-7 overall, remain perfect in the WCC at 4-0, and they have extended their wining streak to a season-high seven. USD has also won 10 of their last 11 games. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 8-11 overall and they fall to 1-3 in the WCC.
The Broncos got on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across their only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. The SCU run came on a TJ Braff RBI single, which scored, Steve Berman, who reached on an error, to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
San Diego then responded in the top of the fifth inning, as they scored a pair of runs on four hits. Jerod Smith got things started with a single up the middle, and he moved to third on an Austin Bailey single to left field. A Bryson Brigman bunt single, drove in Smith, and a Kyle Holder RBI single to left field drove in Bailey, to give the Toreros a 2-1 lead.
Offensively for the Toreros, Bailey led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Jerod Smith also had a god day at the plate, as he went 2-for-3 with one run scored.
David Hill (4-2) had another masterful performance on the mound for the Toreros, allowing one run, on four hits, while striking out seven in 8.0 innings of work. Anthony McIver came on to pick up his sixth save of the season, as he allowed no runs on one hit in 1.0 innings of work. SCU's Steven Wilson (2-2) was saddled with the loss for the Broncos, as he allowed two runs on seven hits in 8.0 innings of work.
The Toreros and Broncos will resume this thee-game series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game.
