PALO ALTO, Calif. - The 29th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team dropped a 7-3 decision to Stanford University Monday afternoon in a non-conference game at Sunken Diamond.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 13-9 overall, but have now won eight of their last 10 games. With the win, the Cardinal improve to 10-11 overall and snap a five-game losing streak.
San Diego wasted no time in scoring, as they managed to push across two runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. With one out, Austin Bailey got things going with a single through the right side. Kyle Holder was then hit by a pitch, and two batters later, Bryson Brigman drove in Bailey with an RBI single up the middle, which also moved Holder to second. Ryan Kirby then drew a walk to load the bases, and Hunter Mercado-Hood then drove in Holder with a single to give USD a 2-0 lead.
The Cardinal evened the score up in the bottom of the second inning, scoring a pair of unearned runs. The Stanford runs came on a 2-run bases-loaded single to left field by Beau Branton, to move the score to 2-2.
The Cardinal then broke open the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring four runs, highlighted by an Austin Barr 3-run homer to move the score to 6-3. Stanford would then tack on one run in the sixth, while USD scored one in the ninth to put the game at its final of 7-3.
Offensively for the Toreros, Holder had a good day, as he went 2-for-3 with one run scored, while Brigman went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Bailey was the final Torero to collect multiple hits, as he went 2-for-5.
Jonathan Teaney (0-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed four runs on four hits in 3.1 innings of work. Stanford's Logan James (2-1) was credited with the win, as he allowed no runs on two hits in 2.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Thursday, as they welcome Brigham Young University to town for the opening game of a 3-game West Coast Conference series. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside the friendly confines of Fowler Park.
