SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team cruised to a 7-1 win over Brigham Young University in a West Coast Conference game at Fowler Park.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 14-9 overall, move to 6-1 in the WCC, and have now won nine of their last 11 games. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 11-14 overall and 4-3 in the WCC.
San Diego got on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across two runs on two hits in the bottom of the second inning. Ryan Kirby got things started with a single up the middle. Jerod Smith then drew a walk, which moved Kirby to second. Ben Wylly was then hit by a pitch, and Riley Adams drove in the two runs with a single to right field to give USD a 2-0 lead.
BYU then cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth inning, as a Colton Shaver RBI double, scored Hayden Nielson, who had singled, to move the score to 2-1.
USD then went on to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, one in the seventh and two more in the eighth to put the game at its final of 7-1.
Offensively for the Toreros, Adams led the way, as he went 3-for-3 with two RBI, and one walk. Holder also had a productive night, as he went 3-for-4 with a double.
David Hill (5-2) turned in another dominating performance on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on five hits, while striking out 10 in 8.0 innings of work. This marked the first earned run Hill has allowed in his past five outings. BYU's Kolton Mahoney (2-3) was saddled with the loss on the mound, as he allowed five runs on 10 hits in 6.2 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they resume this three-game WCC series with BYU in a 6 p.m. game at Fowler Park.
