SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 29th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team pounded out a season-high 21 hits en route to a 19-3 win over Brigham Young University Friday evening in a West Coast Conference game at Fowler Park.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 15-9 overall, move to 7-1 in the WCC, have claim this three-game series over the Cougars, and have now won 10 of their last 12 games. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 11-15 overall and 4-4 in the WCC.
San Diego wasted no time in scoring, as they pushed across four runs in the bottom of the first inning on five hits. Austin Bailey led off the frame with a single up the middle. Kyle Holder then kept things rolling, with a single through the right side, which moved Bailey to third. Colton Waltner then drove in Bailey with a sacrifice fly to centerfield for the first run of the game. Ryan Kirby then singled to move Holder to third, and Jerod Smith then hit an RBI single for the second run of the game. A fielding error by BYU then allowed the third run to come in and the final run of the frame came on a Riley Adams RBI single to give USD a 4-0 lead.
San Diego's offensive then continued to put it on, as they went on to score three runs in the second, four in the third, six in the fourth, and one in each of the fifth and eighth innings, while BYU scored three in the top foo the eighth inning to put the game at its final of 19-3.
Offensively for the Toreros, Waltner led the way, as he went 3-for-3 with a double and four RBI. Kirby also had a great day at the plate, as he went 4-for-6 with four RBI, while five other Toreros recorded multiple hits as well.
PJ Conlon (4-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no runs on two hits, while striking out seven in 6.0 innings of work. BYU's Jeff Barker (1-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Cougars, as he allowed 11 runs, eight earned, on 12 hits in 2.2 innings of work.
The Toreros and Cougars will conclude this three-game series on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Fowler Park.
