SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team dropped a tough 6-4 decision to the University of San Francisco Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at Fowler Park.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 22-16 overall, move to 12-6 in the WCC and are now in a second place tie with Pepperdine, just two games back of USF. With the win, the Dons improve to 22-19 overall and 14-4 in the WCC, and remain in sole possession of first place in the WCC.
The Dons got on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across one run in the top of the first inning. The USF run came on a Nico Giarratano solo home run to right field to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
USF then tacked on two more runs in the top of the third inning, only to see USD take them right back in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Kyle Holder was hit by a pitch. Jesse Jenner then launched his first home run of the season, a 2-run shot to left field, moving the score to 3-2.
USD then evened up the score in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Jenner sacrifice fly to centerfield, which scored Austin Bailey, who had walked, to move the score to 3-3.
USF then went on to score one in the seventh and two in the eighth, while USD scored one in the eighth, but could score no more leaving 10 runners on base for the game.
Offensively for the Toreros, both Aidan Stinnett and Riley Adams went 2-for-4, while Bailey went 2-for-2 with a double and one run scored.
Drew Jacobs (2-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on four hits in 3.2 innings of work. USF's Matt Narahara (1-2) picked up the win on the mound for the Dons, as he allowed no runs on three hits in 2.1 innings of work. Travis Ulvestad picked up his third save, and second of the weekend, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 1.2 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Monday, as they host Nevada in a 6 p.m. non-conference game at Fowler Park.
