SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team (25-18) dropped a 9-4 decision to UC Irvine (25-16) Tuesday evening in a non-conference game at Fowler Park.
The Anteaters got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to score three runs in the top of the first inning. The UCI runs came on a Keston Hiura RBI single, a bases-loaded Jerry McClanahan walk, and when Andrew Martinez hit into a double play to give UCI a 3-0 lead.
USD then took back a run in the bottom of the first inning. Kyle Holder led off the frame with a single to left centerfield. Jerod Smith then singled up the middle to move Holder to third, and Austin Bailey hit into a double play to score Holder and move the score 3-1.
USD then evened the score in the bottom of the fourth inning by scoring a pair of runs on an Andrew Solomon 2-run double down the left field line, which scored Aidan Stinnett, who was hit by a pitch, and Bailey, who had singled, to move things to 3-3.
UCI then scored two in the fifth, while USD took one back in the fifth, only to see the Anteaters score four runs in the top of the sixth to put the game at its final of 9-4.
Offensively for the Toreros, Bailey led the way, as he went 3-for-4 with one run scored, while Smith went 3-for-5.
