SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team's bats exploded, as 17 hits lead to the Toreros scoring 15 unanswered runs in a 15-2 win over UC Riverside Wednesday evening in a non-conference game at Fowler Park.
The Highlanders (10-24) got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to push across two runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. The UCR runs came on a Vince Fernandez 2-run homer to right field, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead.
San Diego (18-13) then responded in the bottom of the first inning by scoring five runs on two hits. Back-to-back walks to Bryson Brigman and Kyle Holder got things started. Two batters later, Jesse Jenner was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jerod Smith then drew a walk to score the first run of the inning. Riley Adams drove in Holder with a sacrifice fly to left field, and Aidan Stinnett did the rest with a three-run homer to right field to give USD a 5-0 lead.
USD then went on to score two more runs in the fourth and eight more in the eighth to put the game at its final of 15-2.
Offensively for the Toreros, Stinnett led the way, as he went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI. Melker also had a great night, as he went 4-for-5 with an RBI.
Jacob Hill (5-2) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed two runs on five hits, while striking out five in 5.0 innings of work. Cody Rogina (0-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Highlanders, as he allowed seven runs on six hits in 4.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they resume West Coast Conference play with a 6 p.m. game against the University of the Pacific at Fowler Park.
