SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team dropped game one of a double-header to Pepperdine University, 4-2, Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at Fowler Park.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 29-20 overall, and 17-8 in the WCC. With the win, the Waves improve to 25-23 overall and 13-8 in the WCC.
The Waves got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to push across one run on three hits in the top of the third. The Pepperdine run came on a 2-out Hutton Moyer RBI single, which scored Chase Lambert, who had doubled, to give the Waves a 1-0 lead.
After the Waves doubled their lead with one run in the top of the fifth, San Diego answered back in the bottom of the fifth by scoring one run on two hits. Back-to-back singles by Ryan Kirby and Colton Waltner got things started. Ben Wylly then reached on a fielder's choice, which moved Kirby to third and had Waltner thrown out at second. Riley Adams then drove in the run when he reached on a RBI fielder's choice to cut the lead in half at 2-1.
The Waves then went on to score one run in the eighth and ninth innings, while USD scored one in the eighth to put the game at its final of 4-2.
Offensively for the Toreros, Waltner and Kirby each went 2-for-4.
PJ Conlon (6-4) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed three runs on seven hits in 7.1 innings of work. Pepperdine's Chandler Blachard (2-2) was credited with the win, as he allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits in 6.1 innings of work. Max Gamboa came on and picked up his fifth save of the season, as he allowed no runs on one hit in 1.2 innings of work.
The Toreros and Waves will conclude this series with a second game this evening at Fowler Park.
