LONG BEACH, Calif. - Junior right-handed pitcher Taylor Kaczmarek turned in a dominating seven inning performance to help propel the University of San Diego baseball team to a 5-0 non-conference win over Long Beach State Tuesday evening at Blair Field.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 31-20 overall, and have swept the season series with the Dirtbags. With the loss, LBSU falls to 25-23 overall and have now lost three straight games.
Kaczmarek (1-1) had his best performance on the mound for the Toreros this season, as he picked up the win, allowing no runs, while scattering three hits in 7.0 innings of work. He retired nine in a row between the third and seventh innings, and recorded a career-high five strikeouts this evening.
San Diego wasted no time in scoring, as they managed to score three runs in the top of the first inning. Back-to-back singles by Kyle Holder and Bryson Brigman got things started for USD. On a double steal attempt, Holder was thrown out at third, but Brigman safely made it to second. Two batters later, Jesse Jenner hit an RBI single to score Brigman. Ryan Kirby Kept things going with a run scoring double, which scored Jenner for the second run of the frame. Colton Waltner then capped the scoring for the inning with a RBI single to right centerfield, scoring Kirby to give USD a 3-0 lead.
USD then scored one run on the top of the second on a Brigman run-scoring double, and added in one more in the top of the seventh on a LBSU fielding error to put the game at its final of 5-0.
Offensively for the Toreros, Brigman led the way, as he went 4-for-5 with a double and one RBI.
San Diego will return to action on Wednesday, as they conclude the regular-season with a 6 p.m. non-conference game against UC Riverside.
