LOS ANGELES., Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team received a dominating performance from junior left-hander PJ Conlon en route to a series clinching 1-0 win over Loyola Marymount University Saturday evening in a West Coast Conference game at Paige Stadium.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 26-18 overall, move into sole possession of first place in the WCC at 16-7, and have won the series against LMU for the first the since the 2010 season. With the loss, the Lions fall to 27-18-1 overall and 13-10 WCC.
San Diego was able to score the only run of the game in the top of the third inning. After not being able to score in the second inning despite having a runner at third, Ryan Kirby led off the top of the third by launching his second home run of the season, a solo shot to right centerfield to give USD the 1-0 lead.
PJ Conlon (6-3) was putting on a pitching clinic, a he had the LMU batters completely baffled, scattering just three hit hits over his 8.1 innings of work, while recording nine strikeouts in getting his sixth win of the season. Anthony McIver then came on a with a runner at second in the bottom of the ninth and he hit his first batter to make things really interesting. Then after a groundout placed the tying run 90 feet away, McIver struck out the final batter of the game to pick up the save and give USD the series win.
Offensively for the Toreros, Kirby led the way as he went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday, as they look to complete a three-game sweep against LMU with a 1 p.m. first pitch at Paige Stadium.
