NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of San Diego baseball team dropped a 8-4 decision to No. 3 Vanderbilt University Friday evening in in the season-opener for both teams at Hawkins Field.
The Commodores (1-0) got on the scoreboard first when Connor Kaiser drew a bases-loaded walk, to give VU a 1-0 lead. The Commodores then scored one run in each of the next two innings to take a 3-0 lead.
San Diego (0-1) then responded in the top of the fourth inning. Back-to-back singles by Brhet Bewley and Ryan Kirby got things started. Troy Conyers flew out to right, which moved Bewley to third, and Riley Adams then launched a 2-run double to right field, which scored both runners to cut the lead to one at 3-2.
Vanderbilt took back those two runs in the bottom half of the fourth on a Jeren Kendal 2-run homer. The Commodores then and added in one more run in the sixth, to take a 6-2 lead.
San Diego took back a pair of runs in the top of the eighth on a Bryson Brigman 2-run single, but Vanderbilt took those runs right back in the bottom of frame on a 2-run homer by Kendal, to move the score to 8-4.
Offensively for the Toreros, Brigman led the way, as he went 3-for-5 with two RBI, and Adams also had a good day at the plate, as he went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
On the mound, Troy Conyers (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros, as he allowed five runs on six hits in 3.2 innings of work. Jordan Sheffeld (1-0) was credited with the win for the Commodores, as he allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits in 5.0 innings of work, while also recording seven strikeouts.
San Diego and Vanderbilt will return to actin on Saturday, as they continue this three-game series with a 2 p.m, game at Hawkins Field.
