NASHVILLE, Tenn. â€" No. 3 Vanderbilt University scored seven unanswered runs to claim a 13-6 win over the University of San Diego baseball team Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Hawkins Field.
The Commodores (2-0) got on the scoreboard first, as in the bottom of the third, Kyle Smith launched a two-run homer to left field, which gave the home team the early advantage. VU then tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a commanding 6-0 lead.
San Diego (0-2) didn't just fade away, as they answered back in the top of the sixth inning, scoring six runs on five hits. Hunter Mercado-Hood got things started with a stand-up double. Spencer Dunlap then reached on a fielder's choice bunt, and Mercado-Hood remained at second. Daniel Gardner then loaded the bases with a single, and Bryson Brigman drew a bases-loaded walk to score Mercado-Hood. Back-to-back RBI singles by Brhet Bewley and Riley Adams then scored the next two runs, still with no outs. Troy Conyers kept things going with an RBI ground out, and Ryan Kirby then singled in the fifth run of the frame. Jerod Smith then capped the scoring with an RBI sacrifice bunt to move the score to 6-all.
Vanderbilt then responded with seven unanswered runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game at its final of 13-6.
Offensively for the Toreros, Adams led the way, as he went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Gardner also had a good day, as he went 2-for-4.
Gary Cornish (0-1) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed four runs on five hits in 3.1 innings of work. Vanderbilt's Ben Bowden (1-0) picked up the win for the Commodores, as he allowed five runs on five hits in 5.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday, as they conclude this three-game series with a 10 a.m. game at Hawkins Field.
