NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- No. 3 Vanderbilt University completed a three-game sweep of the University of San Diego baseball team with a 17-1 win on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game at Hawkins Field.
The Commodores (3-0) wasted no time on Sunday jumping on the Toreros (0-3) for four runs in the first inning and 14 in the first three. VU rolled into the third inning already with a 6-0 lead before exploding for eight runs on six hits to put the game on ice. Vanderbilt also added two in the fourth, and one in the sixth to take a 17-0 lead.
San Diego then spoiled the shutout in the top of the ninth inning, by scoring one run on two hits. Alex Gomez got things started with a lead-off double. James Bonds then drew a walk, and Matthew Whitney reached on a fielder's choice, that saw Gomez get thrown out at third and Bonds move to second. Jay Schuyler then loaded the bases with a single, and two batters later, Jacob Hill, who was pinch running for Bonds, scored on a wild pitch to put the game at its final of 17-1.
Offensively for the Toreros, Gomez, Hunter Mercado-Hood, Bryson Brigman, Brhet Bewley, Schuyler and Daniel Gardner all collected one hit a piece.
Nick Sprengel (0-1) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed eight runs on five hits in 2.0 innings of work. Vanderbilt's Ryan Johnson (1-0) picked up the win for the Commodores, as he allowed no runs on two hits in 4.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Monday evening, as they take a break from the season to host KT Wiz in a 6 p.m. exhibition game at Fowler Park. USD then resumes the season on Thursday, as they take on cross-town rival San Diego State in a neutral field game at Lake Elsinore at 6 p.m.
