Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of San Diego baseball team (2-3) racked up 18 hits en route to a 17-5 win over the University of Nebraska (1-3) Friday evening in the nightcap of the Tony Gwynn Classic at Fowler Park.

San Diego wasted no time in scoring, as they did majority of their damage in the first inning, scoring eight runs on nine hits. Brhet Bewley got things started with a stand-up double off the centerfield fence. Bryson Brigman then singled, which moved Bewley to third. After Brigman stole second, Hunter Mercado-Hood drew a walk to load the bases. Riley Adams pushed across the first two runs on a 2-run single up the middle. Ryan Kirby kept things rolling with a walk, then Daniel Gardner laced a double down the right field line, to score the next two runs. Kevin Collard then unleashed his first home run of the season, a 3-run blast over the left field fence to give USD a 7-0 lead. Back-to-back singles by Connor Doyle and Jeffrey Houghtby, kept things going, and Bewley then capped the scoring for the inning with an RBI single to give USD an 8-0 lead.

San Diego then went on to score one more run in the third, four more in the fifth, and four in the eighth, while Nebraska score two runs in the sixth and seventh innings, and one in the eighth, to put the game at its final of 17-5.

Offensively for the Toreros, Adams led the way, as he went 3-for-5 with a single, a double, a home run and four RBI, just falling a triple shy of the cycle. Brigman also had a huge day 4-for-6, and he had a double and three RBI.

Troy Conyers (1-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no runs on five hits, while striking out six batters in 5.0 innings of work. Nebraska's Colton Howell (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Huskers, as he allowed eight runs on seven hits in 0.1 innings of work.

San Diego will return to action on Saturday, as they will take on No. 20 Tulane in the winners bracket of the Tony Gwynn Classic at 6 p.m. at USD's Fowler Park. The winner of this game will move on to the championship game at San Diego State's Tony Gwynn Stadium on Sunday at 10 a.m.
