SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The University of San Diego baseball team dropped the championship game of the Tony Gwynn Classic to UC Santa Barbara by a final of 9-3, Sunday morning at SDSU's Tony Gwynn Stadium.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 3-4 overall, and saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. With the win, the Gauchos improve to 6-1 overall.
The Gauchos got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to score on run in the bottom of the first inning on a Dempsey Grover RBI single, which scored Andrew Calica, who had singled, to take an early 1-0 lead.
San Diego then evened up the score win the top of the third, as Troy Conyers got things started with a single. Conyers then moved to second on a Jeff Houghtby single, and a fielding error then loaded the bases. Hunter Mercado-Hood drove in Conyers with a sacrifice fly to right field, to move the score to 1-1.
USD then took the lead in the top of the fourth on a Daniel Gardner groundout, which scored Riley Adams, who had doubled, to give USD a 2-1 lead.
The Gauchos then went on to score three runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and one run in the sixth and seventh to break open the game. USD would take back one more run in the top of the seventh to put the game at its final of 9-3.
Offensively for the Toreros, Kevin Collard led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.
Paul Richan (0-1) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed three runs on two hits in 1.0 innings of work. Joe Record (2-0) picked up the win for the Gauchos, as he allowed two runs on four hits in 6.1 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday, as they take on their cross-town rival San Diego State in a 6 p.m.. non-conference game at Tony Gywnn Stadium.
