Final Stats

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Troy Conyers (3-2, 2.35 ERA) led the Toreros (12-9, 1-1 WCC) to their first WCC victory on Saturday night as USD shutout the Saint Mary's Gaels (10-7, 1-1 WCC) 4-0 at Fowler Park.

In the first inning Conyers found trouble, allowing two hits that put runners on second and third with one out. However, the Torero junior would answer with a strike out and a pop out to silence the Saint Mary's threat. The 6'5" left-hander cruised through the next seven innings while allowing only one more runner to advance into scoring position.

Riley Adams had another outstanding night at the plate for Rich Hill's team as the sophomore catcher went 3-for-4 on the night. Adams may have made his greatest contributions on the base paths on Saturday, as he scored San Diego's first run with a fantastic head-first slide into home plate on a Brhet Bewley sacrifice fly to left field.

Adams also scored the Toreros' second run of the game in the seventh inning when a Hunter Mercado-Hood RBI single scored him from second base. Jerod Smith capped off the seventh with an RBI sacrifice bunt that scored James Bonds.

With a 3-0 lead Conyers continued to deal on the mound retiring the Gaels' batters in order with two strikeouts in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the frame junior transfer Daniel Gardner crushed his first home run as a Torero with a no doubt drive over the right field wall.

The Gaels got their fifth and final hit in the top of the ninth before Nathan Kuchta relieved Conyers. The Torero starter finished the night with nine strikeouts while allowing one walk in eight innings of work. Kuchta would need only eight pitches to record three outs and end the game.

The WCC rivals will take the field Sunday at 1 p.m. to decide the series.
