SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team exploded for 12 hits en route to picking up a 9-3 win over William and Mary (5-5) Sunday evening in a non-conference game at Fowler Park.
The Toreros (5-6) got on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning. Jeff Houghtby got things started with a single to center field. Jerod Smith then moved Houghtby to second on a sacrifice bunt, and Riley Adams hit a run-scoring double down the left field line to score Houghtby. After Ryan Kirby drew a walk, Troy Conyers launched a 2-run double down the right field line to cap the scoring for the inning, and give USD a 3-0 lead.
USD then went on to score one run in the third, two in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the eighth, while William and Mary managed to score one run in the third, fifth and ninth innings to put the game at its final of 9-3.
Offensively for the Toreros, Adams led the way, as he went 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI. Daniel Gardner also had a great day, as he went 3-for-5 with triple and one run scored, while Houghtby went 2-for-5 and had one run scored.
For the Tribe, Kyle Wrighte led the offense, as he went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and he drew one walk. Ryan Hall, Charley Gould, Cullen Large, and Charles Ameer all recorded multiple hits as well.
Gary Cornish (1-0) had a great outing for the Toreros, as he allowed two runs on six hits, while striking out seven in 6.0 innings of work. Jonathan Teaney picked up his second save of the season, as he allowed one run on six hits, while striking out five in 3.0 innings of work. William and Mary's Mitchel Aker (1-1) was saddled with the loss for the Tribe, as he allowed six runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings of work.
The Toreros and Tribe will resume this three-game series on Monday with a 6 p.m. first pitch at Fowler Park.
