PORTLAND, Ore. â€" The University of San Diego baseball team cruised its way to an 9-1 win over the University of Portland Friday night in the night-cap of a West Coast Conference double-header.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 22-24 overall, move to 9-11 in the WCC, and have claimed the three-game series with the Pilots. With the loss, the Pilots fall to 15-26 overall and 2-15 in the WCC.
The Toreros got on the scoreboard first, as they pushed in one run on one hit in the top of the first inning. Daniel Gardner got things started with a single, then stole second, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Bryson Brigman then drove in Gardner with a RBI groundout to the second baseman, to give USD the 1-0 lead.
San Diego then added on three more runs in the top of the second inning. Hunter Mercado-Hood led off the frame with a double to left field. Three batters later, Riley Adams drew a walk. Back-to-back RBI singles by Jeff Houghtby and Daniel Gardner scored all three Torero runs, to give USD a 4-0 lead.
The Pilots then answered back in the bottom of the second, scoring on run on Cooper Hummel RBI single to give the home team their only run of the game.
USD then went on to score three runs in the seventh, and two more in the ninth innings to put the game at its final of 9-1.
Offensively for the Toreros, Gardner led the way, as he went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Brigman went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Roman Garcia went 2-for-4 with one double, one home run and two RBI.
Troy Conyers (5-5) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on four hits, while striking out a career-high 12 batters in 7.1 innings of work. Davis Tominaga (3-8) was saddled with the loss for the Pilots, as he allowed seven runs on 10 hits in 6.2 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday at 11 a.m., when then conclude this three-game series with the Pilots.
