NEW ORLEANS, Louis. -- The Torero baseball team (10-3) completed the four-game sweep at Tulane Sunday afternoon with a 6-2 win over the Green Wave. Paul Richan was excellent in his first start of the year, pitching six innings of one run ball with seven strikeouts. The Toreros are the first team to sweep Tulane in a four game series at home in 56 years.
The Toreros scored in the second inning for the fourth straight game. With runners on first and third, Connor Doyle hit a two-out RBI single to center to give USD a 1-0 lead.
USD added a run in the third inning. Jeff Houghtby led off the inning with a single up the middle. After the next two batters were retired, Jay Schuyler hit a RBI double down the right field line putting USD up 2-0.
Tulane responded in the third inning, scoring on a Lex Kaplan RBI single through the right side. Paul Kunst led off the fifth with a single through the left side and came around to score on a Riley Adams sacrifice fly to left field.
The Toreros scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning when Houghtby and Adams scored on back-to-back wild pitches, bringing the score to 5-1.
USD added one more in the top of the ninth on a Jay Schuyler RBI groundout, scoring Colton Waltner, Schuyler's second RBI of the day.
Richan (1-0) earned his first win of the season after he allowed just three hits and one run in six innings while striking out seven. Jonathan Teaney made his first relief appearance of the season, pitching the final three innings, giving up just a ninth inning solo home run to Hunter Hope.
Since dropping two of three to No. 6/7 Vanderbilt in the opening weekend, the Toreros have won nine of their past ten games. In the Toreros' sweep of the Green Wave, USD outhit Tulane 42-23.
The Toreros return to Fowler Park Tuesday to host cross-town rival San Diego State for a 6:00 p.m. game. USD will then begin their conference season when they invite Portland to town for a weekend series.
