SAN DIEGO â€" The 23rd-ranked USD Toreros earned their third straight WCC series win and second WCC series sweep with today's 8-2 victory over the USF Dons. Sophomore third baseman Brhet Bewley led the Torero offensive attack by going 3-for-4 with 4 RBI and 1 home run. Jay Schuyler continued his torrid hitting by going 3-for-3 at the plate and junior catcher Riley Adams jump started the offense with his 7th home run, a 2-run shot in the 3rd inning. Sophomore pitcher Paul Richan improved his record to 3-0 after going 6.2 innings while scattering 8 hits and giving up just one run.
In the second inning the Toreros (19-6, 8-1 WCC) had bases loaded with two outs, but USF pitcher Benji Post got Colton Waltner to ground out to third base. The Toreros scored 3 runs in the third inning to take the early lead. Hunter Mercado-Hood opened the inning with a bad hop single and then Riley Adams hit his 7th homer of the year to right field to give the Toreros a 2-0 lead. Roman Garcia followed with a double down the left field line and Jay Schuyler followed with a single. Brhet Bewley then hit a deep ball to right field to knock in Garcia from third with a sacrifice fly for the 3-0 lead. Two innings later Bewley blasted a 2-run homer that scored Schuyler.
The Dons threatened in the top of the 6th. With runners on first and second with two outs, Brady Bate hit a looping fly ball to center field. Colton Waltner raced in and dove to make an acrobatic catch to keep the Dons scoreless. USD extended their lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the sixth. Roman Garcia's RBI single plated Colton Waltner who had reached on an error. Schuyler and Bewley would each add RBI singles.
San Francisco (14-14, 2-7) would add single runs in the 7th and 9th. USF was paced by DH Riley Helland who went 3-for-4 with 1 run scored. For USD, Riley would finish 2-for-4 at the plate with 2 runs and 2 RBI. Roman Garcia went 2-for-5 with 2 runs and 1 RBI. Senior CJ Burdick pitched the final 2 innings to close out the game.
The Toreros are back in action on Tuesday with a 6:00 p.m. road game at Cal State Fullerton. USD returns to Fowler Park on Wednesday, April 5th, to host New Mexico at 6:00 pm.
