SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The No. 19 USD baseball team (27-9, 13-3) knocked off BYU 6-3 to win their season-high seventh game in a row Thursday evening at Fowler Park. Nick Sprengel was spectacular, pitching eight shutout innings of five hit ball while striking out seven batters. Roman Garcia and Brhet Bewley each had two RBI.

The Toreros were the first to score, plating a run in the first inning on a Roman Garcia RBI groundout to short to score Jay Schuyler, who singled up the middle. Schuyler has now reached base in 21 straight games.

USD opened up a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs on three hits. With runners on first and second, Garcia singled up the middle for his second RBI of the night. Two batters later Kevin Collard hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly to right to score Riley Adams. Brhet Bewley capped off the third inning scoring with a two-run single to right.

Jay Schuyler and Riley Adams hit back-to-back doubles in the top of the seventh to put USD up 6-0. The Cougars got on the board in the top of the ninth inning when Colton Shaver hit a three-run homer off Sean Barry. Troy Conyers then came to get the final three outs of the game to pick up his tenth save, the fifth most in a single-season in program history.

Sprengel (7-1) picked up his team-high seventh win of the season. His eight innings pitched were the most by a Torero pitcher this year. He retired his first eight batters then BYU had back-to-back hits, but Sprengel then retired the next 12 Cougars.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 13-3 in conference and extended their lead in the WCC standings to 1.5 games. USD is now a season-high 18 games over .500.
