SACRAMENTO, Calif. – San Diego Men's Rowing traveled north to the American River for the Head of the American on Saturday, Oct. 26, as the team entered five crews across two events, winning one.
In the Men's Collegiate Four, the Toreros' "A" entry of Derek Hissong, Sam Pigott, Rex Bales, Aidan Andrzejewski and coxswain Lilly Moyer emerged victorious, finishing first of the 25 entries. The team's "C" entry (Owen Park, Warren Roach, Max Salem, Blake Luehrman, and Justin Stinnett) and "B" entry (Jed Rosenblum, Marco Altamura, Joe Tortella, Charlie Atteberry, and Annie Bartolome) both also finished in the top half of the field, in 9th and 10th respectively in their races.
In the teams' second event of the day, the Men's Collegiate Eight, the two entries from USD finished third and fourth out of 17 entries. The "A" entry (Jonah McDonnell, Derek Hissong, Sam Pigott, Colin Mulkerrins, Aidan Andrzejewski, Rex Bales, Gable Krich, Dawson Hein, Santiago Gomez) and "B" entry (Nick Lee, Kacen Hamada, Jed Rosenblum, James Grauley, Jacob Corfey, Joe Tortella, Jadyn Conover, Henry Michaud, Aiden Domingo) finished six seconds apart, in 16:18 and 16:24. Gonzaga's "A" entry won the event.
"It was a good day for our crews," said head coach Bart Thompson. "Our four that won the Head of the Charles last weekend came out and won this afternoon, which was great to see. Our eights finished close together, which highlights the depth that we have this year. We effectively trained through this week's racing, with some heavy volume, and so to see the guys still show up and race well is commendable."
The Toreros finish their fall racing slate on Nov. 10 with the San Diego Fall Classic, a race that is held on the team's home waters of Mission Bay in America's Finest City.
