San Diego Men's Soccer Announces Coaching Promotions

Nicholson named Senior Associate Head Coach, Sanfilippo promoted to Associate Head Coach

SAN DIEGO — The University of San Diego men's soccer program has announced the promotions of two of its longtime staff members, as Mike "Nico" Nicholson has been promoted to Senior Associate Head Coach and Frankie Sanfilippo has been promoted to Associate Head Coach.

"I am thrilled that the University of San Diego has recognized both Coach Nicholson and Coach Sanfilippo for their contributions over the past five years," said head coach Brian Quinn. "COVID was a difficult time for everyone and we adapted superbly to that challenge. Our success has been a complete team effort by players and staff. Both coaches have been an integral part of that success on and off the field."

Nicholson enters his 22nd season with the program in 2026, having first joined the Toreros' staff in 2005 under former head coach Seamus McFadden. Over that span, he has helped San Diego capture six WCC titles and five NCAA Tournament berths, most recently a Sweet Sixteen run in 2024. Before USD, he spent over a decade coaching at UCSD and in Southern California club soccer, and holds a Sports Science degree from the University of Leeds.

Sanfilippo enters his sixth season with the program in 2026 after joining the staff in 2021 from Albion FC, where he ran the club's operations and developmental teams. Since arriving at USD, he's been part of four straight WCC championships and four consecutive NCAA Tournament trips, including last season's No. 9 overall seed. A San Diego native, Sanfilippo played collegiately at San Jose State before a 13-year professional career that included a 2012 NASL title with Tampa Bay.
