(Spokane, WA) - With exceptional pitching from senior Aaron Wilson coupled with an offense that generated 10 runs on 17 hits, San Diego cruised to a 10-3 victory over division rival Gonzaga on Saturday. Playing in Avista Stadium, Spokane's minor league ballpark, San Diego (15-17) played error free defense and scored in all but two innings, routing Gonzaga (10-18) to even the three-game weekend series.
Wilson (6-2) was dominant, earning his league leading sixth win, allowing just one run through eight complete innings. Wilson's season ERA dips to 3.18.
The Toreros put runs on the board in all but two frames, jumping out to a one-run lead in the first inning on an RBI double by Freddy Sandoval. Senior Joey Prast extended the lead with a solo homerun in the third off Gonzaga starter Ed Clelland (1-4). Clelland was ripped for 13 hits and eight earned runs over five innings. RBI singles by Randy Curtis and Trevor Pike in the fourth were followed by a two-run fifth in which Josh Hansen doubled and Sandoval homered.
Sandoval, a junior from Tijuana, Mexico, went 3-for-4, with a homer, double, and four RBI. In all, four Toreros enjoyed three-hit afternoons. Pike was 3-for-5 with two RBI, Curtis was also 3-for-5 and Keoni Ruth was 3-for-5 with an inside the park homerun. Shortstop Jose Ortega went 2-for-5 Saturday, fresh off a three-hit performance Friday. Ortega's season average is now at .303.
San Diego brought in Brian Jones and James Wickman to pitch in the ninth. After Jones yielded two runs on three hits, Wickman recorded the final two outs. The weekend series in Spokane wraps up Sunday at 1pm.
