SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's swimming and diving team finished in second place with 773 points behind non-conference opponent Loyola Marymount earning 795 points in the first annual USD Beach Cup Invitational hosted at the USD Swim Complex. WAC opponent Fresno State was also in attendance finishing in third place with 318 points.
The 19 event format included four relays, two rounds of diving and 13 individual events.
In the relays, USD took two first place finishes and a pair of second place finishes. The Toreros took top spot in the 400 medley relay (Yoon, Geerdes, Rodriguez, and Voyles) with 4:03.25 and the 800 freestyle relay (Geerdes, Voyles, Gleason, and Yoon) in 7:49.18. They finished second place in the 200 freestyle relay (Geerdes, Yoon, Voyles, and Levesque) in 1:39.42 and the 400 freestyle relay (Yoon, Gleason, Voyles, and Geerdes) in 3:34.05.
Monica Oddo took first place in both diving events scoring 220.50 points in the first round and 219.08 points in the second round. Teammate Amy Bogart took third place in the first round of diving with 212.33 points and second place in the later round with 213.45 points.
Sarah Gleason had a stellar day with two first place finishes in the distance events. In the 500 freestyle, she finished in 5:07.34 followed by a first place finish in the 1650 freestyle with 17:32.55. Teammate Sarah Geerdes had an equally impressive day of swimming with three first place finishes in her individual events. She finished 2:08.58 in the 200 individual medley, followed by a 58.30 time in the 100 butterfly, and wrapped it up with a 52.91 in the 100 freestyle.
Other top finishers on the day were Rachel McKay with a 4:47.27 in the 400 individual medley to take third place. Danielle Smith took second place in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:10.09 time followed by teammate Laura Pope finished in third place with a 1:10.14. Kristen Yoon finished in first place with a 2:08.29 time in the 200 backstroke followed by a second place in the 100 backstroke with 59.61. Taryn Vangerpen captured third place in the 1650 with a time of 18:23.72. Haley Pittman had a 200 breaststroke time of 2:29.06 to take second place. Jessica Rodriguez took first place in the 200 butterfly in 2:10.80.
Sarah Geerdes had 48 individual points for USD earning the most overall in the meet. Sarah Gleason had 43 in a two way tie for second with the most individual points while teammate Kristen Yoon had 42 individual points.
The Toreros return to the water for their final home meet of the regular season before preparing for the conference meet. They will face crosstown rival San Diego State on Saturday, February 7 at 12:00 p.m. at the USD Swim Complex as they have a senior send off on their final home meet in 2009.
