Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team dropped a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to cross-town rival San Diego State University Tuesday evening in a 13 inning game that lasted 4:29 at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

With the game tied at 4-all headed into the bottom of the 13th inning, SDSU (8-1) managed to load the bases with one out. USD's Anthony McIver then got Andrew Brown to pop up to first base for the second out. Then with a full-count on Justin Wylie, the next pitch was taken by Wylie, and it was ball four, which allowed the Aztecs to sneak away with the victory.

The Aztecs got on the scoreboard first, as in the bottom of the first inning they were able to take advantage of a USD fielding error to score an unearned run when Tyler France reached on a fielder's choice, which scored the runner from third to give SDSU at 1-0 lead.

USD (2-6) answered right back in the top of the second inning, as Colton Walter led off the frame with a triple down the left field line. Two batters later, Jerod Smith laid a perfect squeeze bunt down, then beat out the throw to first, which allowed Waltner to beat the throw to the plate, moving the score to 1-1. Jesse Jenner then kept things rolling, as he singled up the middle in his first at bat of the season, moving Smith to second. After a double steal, Riley Adams hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, which scored Smith, giving USD a 2-1 lead.

After the Aztecs tied the game with one run in the second, and took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with one run, USD would tie things up in the top of the seventh. With one out, Adams got things started with a single through the right side. Ryan Kirby then moved Grant Melker, who was pinch running for Adams, to second. Austin Bailey then drove in Melker with a RBI single to tie things up at 3-3.

USD then scored one run in both the seventh and ninth innings, and SDSU scored one in the eighth to round of the scoring for the day.

Offensively for the Toreros, Smith led the way, as he went 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Bailey also had multiple hits on the day, as he went 2-for-5 with one RBI.

McIver (0-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on two hits in 2.2 innings of work. Zack Oakley (2-0) picked up the win for the Aztecs, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 1.0 innings of work.

USD returns to action on Friday, as they head to Austin, Texas to take on the No. 9 ranked Texas Longhorns. This game will air live on the Longhorn Network.
