SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University Broncos scored seven unanswered runs to claim a 7-1 win over the 30th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at Schott Stadium.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 14-8 overall, move to 5-1 in the WCC and saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end. With the win, the Broncos improve to 9-12 overall and move to 2-4 in the WCC.
San Diego got on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across one run on one hit in the top of the first inning. With one out, Bryson Brigman got things started with a double to left centerfield. Kyle Holder then drew a walk, and Colton Waltner reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Holder to reach second, but got Brigman out at third. Back-to-back walks to Ryan Kirby and Riley Adams gave USD a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Broncos would get on the scoring board, scoring three runs on three hits. The SCU runs came on Stevie Berman run-scoring double, Ryan Budnick RBI groundout, and a bases-loaded walk, to take a 3-1 lead.
SCU would then go on to score four more runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the game at its final of 7-1.
Offensively for the Toreros, Jerod Smith led the way, as he went 2-for-4.
CJ Burdick (1-1) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros, as he allowed three runs on four hits in 3.0 innings of work. SCU's Evan Brisentine (1-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Broncos, as he allowed no runs on three hits in 6.1 innings of work. Reece Karalus came on to pick up the save, as he allowed no runs on one hit in 2.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Monday, as they remain in the Bay Area and take on Stanford University in a 1 p.m. non-conference game at Sunken Diamond.
