MORAGA, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team finished off a postponed game against Saint Mary's College Saturday afternoon with a thrilling 10-8 victory in the 15th inning at Luis Guisto Field in a West Coast Conference game.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 24-16 overall, and 13-6 in the WCC. With the loss, the Gaels fall to 21-19 overall and 7-12 in the WCC.
After the two teams battled through 11 innings on Friday afternoon, and the game tied at 8-all, it was postponed due to darkness, both teams resumed play on Saturday at 1 p.m.
After three more scoreless innings, USD finally broke through in the top of the 15th inning. Austin Bailey got things started with a one-out single up the middle, and he moved to second on a Spencer Dunlap groundout. Ryan Kirby then singled through the left side to score Bailey, and Kirby then moved to second on the throw in. Grant Melker then singled in Kirby to put the game at its final of 10-8.
San Diego got on the scoreboard first, as they pushed across one run in the top of the first inning. With one out, Kyle Holder singled to centerfield. Holder then moved to second on a wild pitch, and he moved to third on a wild pitch. Colton Waltner then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to give USD a 1-0 lead.
SMC then scored one run in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning to take a 3-1 lead.
San Diego's bats then woke up in the top of the seventh, as they scored four runs. Jesse Jenner got things started as he drew his third walk of the game. A Bailey double to left centerfield then moved Jenner to third. Ben Wylly doubled to left field to score Jenner, and moved Bailey to third. After Ryan Kirby drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Hunter Mercado-Hood drove in the next run when he hit the ball to the third baseman, which scored the run from third, had Kirby thrown out at second, and moved Wylly to third, and Mercado-Hood reached first on a fielder's choice. Jerod Smtih then drove in the next two runs on a double to give USD a 5-3 lead.
USD then went on to score two in the eighth and one in the ninth to take an 8-3 lead. Only, the Gales of Saint Mary's were able to rally and score five runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. The SMC runs came on a Zach Kirtley 2-run single, a passed ball, and a Jackson Torenson RBI single to move the score to 8-8.
Offensively for the Toreros, Bailey led the way, as he went 4-for-5 with two doubles and one RBI. Holder also had a good game, as he went 3-for-6 with two doubles and one run scored.
Drew Jacobs (3-2) got the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no runs on two hits in 3.0 innings of work. PJ Conlon came on in the 15th and picked up the save, as he allowed no runs on one hit in 1.0 innings of work. SMC's Corbin Burns (6-4) was saddled with the loss for the Gales, as he allowed two runs on three hits in 4.0 inning of work.
