Box Score

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team rallied to score a pair of runs in the top of the 10th inning, to complete a sweep over Loyola Marymount University with a 7-5 win Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at Paige stadium.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 28-18 overall, move to 17-7 in the WCC, complete a three-game sweep of the Lions, and have secured a spot in the WCC Tournament up at Banner Island Ballpark. USD also just needs two more WCC wins to claim at least a share of the WCC championship. With the loss, the Lions fall to 27-19-1 overall and 13-11 in the WCC.

After USD rallied to score four runs in the top of the ninth, LMU evened up the score with a Ted Boeke solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. USD's offense then continued to roll in the top of the 10th, as they scored two runs on two hits. Jerod Smith got things started with a one-out double to right field. After a USD strikeout, Bryson Brigman was hit by a pitch to give the Toreros a second base runner. Kyle Holder then doubled in both runners to give USD a 7-5 win.

The Lions got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to score one run on a Tanner Donnels run-scoring double to right centerfield, which scored David Fletcher, who had singled, to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

San Diego then answered back in the top of the second by scoring one run on a Ryan Kirby solo home run, his third of the year and second in as many days, to move the score to 1-1.

LMU then went on to score two runs in the third and one in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead, heading into the ninth inning.

San Diego didn't fade away, as they managed to score four runs on three hits in the top of the ninth. The USD rally began with a Brigman 2-out walk. After Brigman advanced to second, Holder singled to right field, which moved Brigman to third, and Brigman then scored on an error by the right fielder. Jesse Jenner then reached on an error by the third baseman, which also moved Holder to third. Austin Bailey laced a double to left field, which scored the two USD base runners to even up the score. James Bonds was then inserted as a pinch hitter, and he hit an RBI single up the middle, which scored Bailey to give USD a 5-4 lead.

Offensively for the Toreros, Holder led the way as he went a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Smith was the only other Torero to record multiple hits, as he went 2-for-5 with a double.

Anthony McIver (1-2) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on two hits in 2.0 innings of work. LMU's J.D. Busfield (3-2) was saddled with the loss for the Lions, as he allowed six runs, two earned, on five hits in 2.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday, as they return to home to host cross-town rival San Diego State in a 6 p.m. non-conference game at Fowler Park.
