SPOKANE, Wash. â€" The No. 19 USD baseball team (21-9, 9-3) silenced the Gonzaga Bulldog bats on their way to a 4-1 win in the series finale Sunday afternoon. Sean Barry and Troy Conyers combined to pitch 5.1 scoreless innings of relief and Hunter Mercado-Hood went 2-for-4 with a two run home run to bring the Toreros' record to 21-9 and 9-3 in conference.
The Toreros were the first to score, plating a run in the top of the first inning. Hunter Mercado-Hood led off with a single through the right side, which was followed by a Colton Waltner walk. Two batters later, Riley Adams brought Mercado-Hood home with an RBI single through the left side.
The Zags responded in the bottom of the first, scoring one run on three hits. With runners on first and second, Justin Jacobs hit an RBI single up the middle to tie the game, that would be the only run of the game for Gonzaga.
USD retook the lead in the top of the fifth with a Hunter Mercado-Hood two-run home run to left. This was Mercado-Hood's eighth bomb of the year, which ties him with Roman Garcia for the team and conference lead.
The Toreros added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, scoring on a fielding error by the Zags' third baseman, giving them a 4-1 lead.
Torero starter Paul Richan allowed one run in 3.2 innings while striking out four. Sean Barry (5-1) earned the win, tossing 2.1 innings of one-hit ball before giving way to closer Troy Conyers, who pitched the final three innings. Conyers gave up just two hits and struck out five to pick up his eighth save of the year.
Zag' starter Casey Legumina (0-4) threw seven innings, giving up four runs on six hits.
The Toreros play at UC Riverside Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. before hosting Pacific for their next WCC series Thursday-Saturday.
