HONOLULU, HI. â€" The USD volleyball team (2-1) closed out the Texaco Rainbow Wahine Invitational with a 3-0 sweep over Marquette Sunday evening. A balanced offensive attack led the Toreros to a 25-20, 25-19, 25 -18 win.
For the second match in a row, Jayden Kennedy led the Toreros in kills, totaling 12 with a .379 attack percentage. Kaity Edwards added 10 kills at an efficient .444 clip. Lauren Fuller and Roxie Wiblin each chipped in nine kills. Kristen Gengenbacher collected 42 assists and Lizzy Tardieu had a match-high 14 digs.
As a team the Toreros hit .311 while holding the Golden Eagles to a .182 kill percentage. USD won the defensive battle as well, totaling 48 digs to Marquette's 43 and out-blocking them 6-3.
The first set was tied at 17-all, but the Toreros closed it out on an 8-3 run. The Toreros' second set was their best offensively, just as it was in Saturday evening's 3-0 sweep of No. 20 Hawai'i. USD hit .395 in the second frame. In the final set, the Toreros had an attack percentage of .225, but held Marquette to a .103 clip.
Marquette was led by Allie Barber's 13 kills. Martha Konovodoff and Lauren Speckman each had 10 kills with Speckman also recording 31 assists.
The Toreros return to San Diego next weekend, hosting a tournament that features Villanova, Georgia Tech and No. 1 Texas. Their home opener is Friday afternoon against Georgia Tech at 1:30 p.m. All USD home matches will be streamed live on TheW.tv.
