SAN DIEGO – Men's rowing wrapped up its fall racing this weekend on its home waters at the San Diego Fall Classic as the team entered three events, finishing in a medal position in all three.
"Our crews had a solid day, particularly given that we were a bit banged up," said USD Head Coach
Bart Thompson. "We were missing four guys from our top two eights, including two guys from the Head of the Charles-winning four. The fact that the team still performed relatively well speaks to the depth of quality in the squad."
The day began with the Men's Open 8+, where the Toreros "A" entry (
Jonah McDonnell,
Jed Rosenblum,
Derek Hissong,
Rex Bales,
James Grauley,
Jadyn Conover,
Gable Krich,
Jacob Corfey, and
Joe Tortella) and "B" entry (
Nick Lee,
Kacen Hamada,
Colin Mulkerrins,
Marco Altamura,
Owen Park,
Warren Roach,
Aiden Domingo,
Santiago Gomez,
Dawson Hein) finished third and fourth, respectively, out of the 17 entries. The top of the field was very tight, as the "A" entry's finishing time of 14:41.4 was only 1.9 seconds behind UCSD's winning time of 14:39.5.
The Men's Open 4+ was highlighted by a second-place finish by its "A" entry (
Derek Hissong,
Jacob Corfey,
Rex Bales,
Joe Tortella,
Jonah McDonnell). The crew finished strongly despite not practicing the boat, owing to two of the lineup's usual members being scratched before the race. The "B" entry (
Dawson Hein,
Gable Krich,
Aiden Domingo,
Blake Luehrman,
Justin Stinnett) finished ninth in the event.
In the team's final event of the day, the Freshman 4+, the lone entry of
Jed Rosenblum,
Warren Roach,
Owen Park,
Marco Altamura, and Annie Bartolome won the event comfortably to cap a successful end to the day and a historic fall racing season for San Diego Men's Rowing.
