SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 30th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team rallied for a 5-4 win over Washington State University Tuesday evening in a non-conference game at Fowler Park.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 11-7 overall, have now won six in a row, and nine of their last 10 games. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 12-8 overall.
The Toreros wasted no time in scoring, as they pushed across two runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. Kyle Holder got things started with a one-out single to left field. Jesse Jenner then doubled to left field, which scored Holder from first, to give USD a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Ryan Kirby hit an RBI single up the middle to score Jenner, and give the Toreros a 2-0 lead.
The Toreros then tacked on a third run in the bottom of the second inning on a Riley Adams RBI groundout to the shortstop, which scored Brigman, who had singled, to give USD a 3-0 lead.
The Cougars then responded in the top of the fourth inning, as they took the lead, scoring four runs on four hits. The WSU runs came on Shane Matheny and Shea Donlin RBI singles, a Wes Hatten run-scoring double, and an Ian Sadgal RBI groundout to move the score to 4-3.
USD then took back the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Toreros scored their runs on a bases-loaded walk, and a Holder sacrifice bunt, to put the game at its final of 5-4.
Offensively for the Toreros, Austin Bailey led the way, as he went 2-for-3 with a double and one run scored. Colton Waltner also had a good day, as he went 2-for-4.
Drew Jacobs (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no runs on one hit in 3.0 innings of work. Anthony McIver picked up his fifth save of the season, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 1.0 innings of work. Tyler McDowell (1-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Cougars, as he allowed two runs on no hits in 1.2 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they travel to Santa Clara University to resume West Coast Conference play. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
